Long non-coding RNAs and their significance in human diseases
Authors
Abstract:
Protein-coding genes account for only a small fraction of the human genome and most of the genomic sequences are transcriptionally silent, but recent observations indicate significant functional elements, including non-coding protein transcripts in the human genome. Long non-coding RNAs (lncRNAs) have been defined as transcripts of >200 nucleotides without protein-coding capacity that perform their function through a number of mechanisms, including the recruitment of chromatin modifier complexes to specific genomic loci, the formation of molecular scaffolds, the modulation of transcriptional processes, and the regulation of miRNAs expression. Recent studies emphazied the increasing role of these lncRNAs in the pathogenesis of the different diseases, challenging the fact that protein-coding genes are the sole contributor to human disease. This study investigates lncRNAs and their crucial role in human diseases such as cancer, cardiovascular diseases, and multiple sclerosis.

Evaluation of Long Non-Coding RNAs: HNF1A-AS1 and MVIH Expressions and Their Clinical Significance in Human Gastric Cancer
Gastric cancer is one of the most common cancers in the world. Late diagnosis is the main cause of the high rate of treatment failure and death among patients with gastric cancer; therefore identifying the molecular basis of cancer initiation and metastasis is so critical for developing efficient methods for early diagnosis and therapy. long non-coding RNAs (lncRNAs) are the largest group of no...
full textThe Role of Long Non-Coding RNAs in Ovarian Cancer
Background: Ovarian cancer is the most fatal tumor of female's reproductive system, and several genetics and environmental factors are involved in its development. Various studies have already identified suitable biomarkers to facilitate the early detection, prognosis evaluation, and the assessment of treatment response. However, the aim of this review was to investigate the role of long non-co...
full textLong Non-Coding RNAs and Complex Human Diseases
Long non-coding RNAs (lncRNAs) are a heterogeneous class of RNAs that are generally defined as non-protein-coding transcripts longer than 200 nucleotides. Recently, an increasing number of studies have shown that lncRNAs can be involved in various critical biological processes, such as chromatin remodeling, gene transcription, and protein transport and trafficking. Moreover, lncRNAs are dysregu...
full textExpression profile of long non-coding RNAs in pancreatic cancer and their clinical significance as biomarkers
Long non-coding RNAs (lncRNAs) have shown great potential as powerful and non-invasive tumor markers. However, little is known about their value as biomarkers in pancreatic cancer (PC). We applied an Arraystar Human LncRNA Microarray which targeting 7419 lncRNAs to determine the lncRNA expression profile in PC and to screen the potential biomarkers. The most increased lncRNAs in PC tissues were...

full textLong Non-coding RNAs and Their Biological Roles in Plants
With the development of genomics and bioinformatics, especially the extensive applications of high-throughput sequencing technology, more transcriptional units with little or no protein-coding potential have been discovered. Such RNA molecules are called non-protein-coding RNAs (npcRNAs or ncRNAs). Among them, long npcRNAs or ncRNAs (lnpcRNAs or lncRNAs) represent diverse classes of transcripts...
